| New product revolutionises condensate disposal | ||
![]() A revolutionary new product developed by water treatment specialist Salamander is designed to work in harmony with condensing boiler technology by neutralising the acid content of the condensate. Salamander's Condensafe is the first 'In line' product on the market designed to provide a sensibly-priced, fast and easy solution to acidic condensate, to enable heating engineers to offer added value to their customers and play a part in maximising the positive effect of high efficiency condensing boilers on the environment. Suitable for all types of condensing boilers, Condensafe instantly changes the condensate from pH 4 (medium strength acid) to between pH 6 and 7 (near-neutral), making condensing boilers even more environmentally friendly. The sealed unit is simply fitted into the condensate line, either at the same time as the boiler is installed or retrospectively. Salamander Sales Director Sue Clews comments: "When operating in condensing mode, condensing boilers produce acidic condensate liquid, which is discharged to the drains. This acid has the potential to damage the environment, and interfere with the operation of sewage works and septic tanks. "It has been calculated that within two years, UK households with condensing boilers will be adding 50 million litres of acid to the drainage systems every week. The potential for environmental damage, therefore, is enormous. "As high efficiency condensing boiler installations increase, the volume of acidic condensate being put down the drain will increase with a potential to grow at a rate of half a million litres per week, over the next few years," adds Sue. "Commercial organisations would not be allowed to discharge an acid of this strength to drain and it's only a matter of time before the same restrictions are applied to domestic boilers, which is one of the reasons why Salamander has invested in developing a product designed specifically to handle the disposal of condensate from condensing boilers and in turn, assist in maximising the benefits to the environment." Launched in December last year, Condensafe is now available from heating and plumbing merchants nationwide. This means that each increase in pH unit represents a 10x increase in strength. For example, an acid at pH 4 is 10x more acidic than one at pH 5.
